I have a severe problem with an USB-Software-RAID1 attached to a Win11-PC.
For the installation of the Software-RAID1 I like to use the built-in-Win11 software-RAID-functionality ( [Win-key] + X -> data storage management -> there using 2 SSD as mirrored volumes as a RAID1. That looks fine as shown in Figure 1 attached. This also works fine.
But it only works as long as I do not restart the PC one single time without the USB-RAID attached. Because upon next restart afterwards with the USB-RAID1 attached, again, the mirror connection is completely lost (see attached Figure 2). There are error messages in data storage management. And the RAID1 can only be rebuilt when starting from the scratch (all data lost).
When using "striped" (RAID0) or "spanned" (JBOD) volume in the Win11 data storage manager (with identical hardware), this problem does not occur, when linking 2 SSD the same way.
It gets even more weired, when using 2 (of the 4 SSD) for "striped volume" and the other 2 for "mirrored volume". When I restart the system after having started it once without attached USB-RAID, not only the mirrored versions are destroyed (as one would expect from above), but also the (otherwise stable) "striped volume" is defective... it seems that the instable mirrored volumes infect the others...
Has anyone an idea what is wrong, here?
I imagine, it might work like this:
- When installing the Software-RAID1, a CONFIG-file is built on the PC with the mirror-connection-information
- When starting the PC without attached USB-RAID1, this CONFIG-file is changed automatically
- When starting the PC afterwards, again, the CONFIG-file is wrong and the RAID1 cannot be set up.
Hardware:
Geekom XT12pro with USB4 (40GBit/s): XT12 Pro – Geekom
All drives an BIOS absolutely new updated
OWC Express 4M2 USB-housing for up to 4 NVMe SSD: OWC Express 4M2: DIY Four-Slot USB4 NVMe M.2 SSD Enclosure
The expensive SoftRAID-Software from OWC is not used and should not be used.
Software:
Windows 11 Pro 25H2
Thank you for any help you can offer. Right now, I have components here for nearly 1000$ and they are of no use for me...
