How do I eliminate space between items in file explorer?

Theres too much space between items in windows explorer. I never had this issue until today. I dont know what happened to bring this about. I have tried to fix this by going to: Folder options > view > decrease space between items (compact view)... but that doesn't work. How do i fix this?
