USB stick recovery instead of built-in reset for OS?

Delly10

Question

I have Win10, but I'm sorry I don't have the version number except it's 22H2 and I have the latest updates installed. I'm not currently using the computer in question, so I don't have access to the exact Windows information such as build.

I was having a lot of trouble with it before and ended up doing a system reset. I used Settings > Update & Security > Recovery, click Get started under "Reset this PC," and I selected to keep my files. This was supposed to give me a clean version of Windows without any corruption, and was supposed to keep my files while erasing any apps I had. My files were preserved, but only about half of the apps were still there. That was the first sign things didn't go correctly. Also, a host of new problems came up and I am now dealing with those in place of what I had before.

I'm thinking the information that was used to reset the PC may also have been corrupted which would explain a lot. Now I just discovered a flash drive that I had made eight years ago when I first got the computer. It is labeled as Windows 10 System Recovery. I heard that this is the thing to use if I am not able to restore the operating system any other way, or if the built-in recovery (reset?) partition is corrupted. Since the flash drive wouldn't be corrupted like the system recovery I originally did may have been, Is this what I should use if I want to try doing a system restore again? Also, Since it was eight years ago when I made it, would I then have to do 8 years worth of updates afterward?
