No startup sound on Windows 10 or 11 with USB Audio

jshs2020

Question

I have 16 motherboards. 2 are ASRock and the rest are MSI. The oldest is a Z590 and the newest are Z790. I have a problem with any motherboard that has USB Audio chip ALC408x. ALC1220 and ALC897 have no issues (They use the HDA drivers not the UAD drivers).

All ASRock boards use ALC897 so that brand is not an issue.

I wish to have the Windows start up sound play. All users for whom I maintain systems want the WIndows startup sound to play.
Of course, we have ticked the sound settings "Play windows start up sound".

With a fresh install of WIndows 10 21H2 on patch 6093 (July 2025) and on WIndows 11 24H2, also on July patch, there are two secnarios.

With nothing but Windows installed and no drivers whatsoever I can get the startup sound to play if I power the computer on via the power switch and when turning off the power via the PSU for 30 seconds and then power up. If I restart there is no startup sound. If I shutdown from start menu and then start up by using my mouse there is no start up sound.

Once I install the Realtek USB Audio driver (many versions up to latest 2413), and with the Realtek Audio Console (All versions from 299 to 372 the latest). The startup sound will not play under any circumstances.

I created a web ticket with MSI but their technical support is unwilling to help. Their answer to all problems is "Update to the latest Windows". Which I have.

Does anyone have an MSI Z790 motherboard with ALC4080/ALC4082 and can get the Windows startup sound to play reliably on WIndows 10 and 11?

The Z790 boards I have are MEG Z790 Ace, Tomahawk, Tomahawk Max, Pro Z790-A and Pro Z790-P (Actually, IIRC, the latter uses ALC897).

All other audio works.

I've checked the critical boot configuration and AudioEndpointBuilder and AudioSrv are there. Nothing in event logs. All services are set to automatic and are starting. Several UEFI versions have been tried on all motherboards. Even cleared CMOS and set things up again. Audio systems a Z607 (5.1), Z906 (5.1) and a couple of stereo 2.1's.

thanks
